Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is one of the most overlooked, yet accessible and affordable measures you can seek to combat the unhealthy effects of stress. Whether your stress is a result of emotional, work related or physical challenges, research demonstrates that touch has a profound and positive effect on one’s physical and emotional state. These positive effects include release of muscular tension, increased circulation and initiation of the relaxation response. The benefits can result in more restful sleep, improved skin tone, lowered blood pressure and enhanced mental clarity. NAC massage experiences are as unique as the individuals who receive them. Our certified therapists offer different styles to help you relax and unwind.

Gift Certificates

Pilates

Pilates (Pih-LAH-teez)is a body-conditioning method developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the 1920’s. Pilates is more than just exercise, it’s a series of controlled movements engaging your body and mind. Pilates works on the deeper core abdominal and low back muscles enabling the rest of the body to move freely. It is considered a low-impact exercise and is suitable for most ages and health conditions.

Private Pilates Studio
Our private Pilates apparatus studio is equipped with the best Pilates equipment available. The equipment is used to help teach you the key Pilates positions. For example, we have a spring-driven machine called a Reformer which helps you increase strength, flexibility, stamina and concentration by using a series of springs and pulleys as the movement system. In addition to the Reformer, we also have a Cadillac, a barrel and a Wunda chair. Our Pilates trainers are authentic Pilates certified teachers and have undergone over 600 apprenticeship hours.

The NAC Pilates studio is operated by professional Pilates instructors Angie McCauley and Associates. For more details and fee information, call 859.494.0463.

Pilates Mat Classes

Intro to Pilates
Everything you need to know before beginning a Pilates Mat Program.

What is Pilates mat exercise?
There are about 40 mat exercises designed by Joseph Pilates that are performed lying on your back, side or front. Some of the exercises are done seated or on all fours. The mat exercises target the deep abdominal and spine muscles in order to provide core strength. Though mat classes were traditionally done with just your body and mat, some classes today incorporate props such as rings, balls and foam rollers.

What results can I expect from Pilates mat exercise?
Regular practice of Pilates mat exercises several times a week can result in improved posture and increased abdominal tone. You may stand taller and your lower abdominal area may appear more flat. You also may experience increased comfort in the movements of your spine. Pilates mat exercises will develop strength, flexibility, coordination and balance, but they will not provide a cardiovascular workout.

How can I tell if Pilates mat exercises are right for me?
Despite their popularity, Pilates mat exercises are not for everyone. Pilates mat exercises can be very demanding, as they put strain on the muscles that support your neck and those that support the lower spine. Discuss your exercise program with your health care professional and with your instructor. If you experience sharp pain during an exercise, don’t try and keep up with the class. Stop, and ask the instructor to help you with a modification. For some people, Pilates apparatus exercise programs or individual mat instruction would be more appropriate than a class setting.

What will class be like?
Pilates classes at NAC last one hour. Mats and exercise equipment such as rings and balls are provided however, some people prefer to purchase their own mat.

Once class begins, you will start by lying on your back and progress to your side or front, to seated and then to all fours. Although the original Pilates method included few standing exercises, some instructors have added them at the end of class.

How do I add Pilates mat exercises to my fitness regimen?
Plan on one hour of Pilates mat exercise, twice a week, in addition to other training. Regular practice of Pilates will provide the benefits of improved alignment and core control in your other fitness activities.
